Ahhhh, the South . . .
What a special, curious and enigmatic region to explore—the colorful, yet broken history that still stirs hyper emotions today, with its diverse, awe-inspiring natural history, it’s Sun Belt climate and regional food and ways of conducting oneself that are rooted in Old English mannerisms from palace to pub. I’m tellin’ you, it’s one awesome, fascinating place, and it’s the setting for my Cinema Man Southern Gothic thriller series in the 1920s Prohibition era.
Hey! . . . welcome to “The Southern Minute.” I’m your host Cave Buckner.
Today, it seems everybody and their dog has a “podcast”—but I started podcasting way back in 2005, but only to let you know, I’m not jumping on some influencer bandwagon to blah, blah, blah.
Every podcast must have a purpose, and mine is simply to talk about observations and little-known facts about a specific Southern topic. Consider it a one-minute investment per week of your time to learn something new about the South, that maybe you did not know before.
For instance, did you know the American alligator is suspected of navigating by the stars, that they might see in color and can detect and sense the direction of sound waves under water that go far below human hearing? It’s only one minute of wisdom, exploration and reflection, but hey, it’s about the South, so it can be just as funny—as terrifying.
Now, I have a disclosure: I actually live in Missouri today, just across the Missouri River from the folk-designated area known as “Little Dixie,” where I was born and raised.
It’s an eight county area that was settled almost exclusively by migrating Southerners, in this case, from Virginia to Kentucky and into Missouri in the 1830s and 40s. That’s my heritage.
I’ve spent time with friends and family from Alabama, the ex-wife was from Pensacola and I was based in Atlanta, Georgia for my creative work for almost three decades. Outside of Missouri, I consider Georgia and Southern-coastal Alabama my stompin’ grounds. And finally—to put the bow on this Southern gift, I’ve got siblings whose families live in North Carolina, Georgia Florida and Texas. So, I’m a Southerner at heart—proud of it—and I’m hoping this comes through in these little vignettes and in my novels, with the first to be published this summer.
If you’re listening to this, you have received a link to my author website, which is:
Cave (that’s C-A-V-E) like a cavern, my last name, Buckner (B-U-C-K-N-E-R), dot com. So, that’s CaveBuckner.com
This is my introduction to “The Southern Minute,” so I hope you enjoy this little feature each and every week, coming from my little recording studio on the banks of the Missouri River.
I’m Cave Buckner—thanks for listening.
